The rule in short
Directive (EU) 2024/825 ("Empowering consumers for the green transition") applies from 27 September 2026. It requires traders to remind consumers of the legal guarantee of conformity in a harmonised way, before the contract is concluded. Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960 fixes the design and content of two objects:
- the harmonised notice on the legal guarantee of conformity (Annex I);
- the harmonised label for the commercial guarantee of durability, known as EU GARAN (Annex II).
People often talk about "the GARAN label" for both. They are different, and the one that concerns most stores is the first.
1. The harmonised notice: every store
The notice reminds the consumer that every good sold in the EU comes with a legal guarantee of conformity of at least two years. The European Commission's practical guidelines for sellers say it must be displayed prominently in all shops, online and offline, at shop level. Online, it can work as a general reminder on the seller's website.
- The design is fixed. Text, colours, layout and QR code are set by the regulation. You do not redraw it, crop it or restyle it. You use the official file.
- Online, use the colour version, shown in full and readable.
- Add a clickable link to the page the QR code points to, since nobody scans a QR code on the screen they are reading. In English: europa.eu/youreurope/guarantees. Each language has its own address (
/garantiesin French,/garantienin German, and so on, listed in the guidelines). - Placement. The guidelines accept a clearly worded mention, for example "Your legal guarantee rights", in the header, on catalogue pages or on the payment page, with the full notice appearing at the first click or hover. They also expect the notice in the order confirmation e-mail.
2. The EU GARAN label: only some products
The label applies to a product only when all of these are true: the guarantee is offered by the producer, at no extra cost, it covers the entire product, and it lasts more than two years. A two-year guarantee, a paid extension, or a guarantee on one component does not qualify.
- The producer provides the information. The seller displays the label when the producer has made it available. The seller is not expected to research every product.
- Only three fields are filled in: the number of years, the brand, and the model identifier. Everything else is fixed, including the line of translations at the bottom.
- Online, a compact "nested" version exists. It shows the number of years, and the full label must appear at the first click, hover or tap. The nested version is for online use only.
- It must be clearly associated with the product, and the guidelines expect it to be shown before the order is placed and in the confirmation e-mail.
- Do not use it for anything else. Not for your own store guarantee, not on a banner that suggests every product is covered.
Where to get the official files
The Commission publishes the notice in all 24 EU languages, the GARAN label files and the practical guidelines for sellers and producers on one page: Practical guidelines and high-resolution vector files of the EU notice and label on product guarantees. Formats include PDF, JPG, PNG and SVG. Read the guidelines before anything else: they are short and written for shop owners.
How to set it up on a Shopify store
You can do all of this without an app.
- Download the notice in each language your store sells in, colour version.
- Create a page, for example "Your legal guarantee rights", that shows the full notice image and the clickable Your Europe link under it. If your store is multilingual, translate the page and use the notice file for each language.
- Link to that page from every page of the store: footer menu or header, with a clear label. Then the notice is one click away from the catalogue, the product page and the cart.
- Add it to the order confirmation e-mail: Settings › Notifications › Customer notifications › Order confirmation › Edit code, then insert the notice image and the link just above the
</body>line near the end of the template, and save. - Checkout. Most stores cannot edit the checkout page itself. A clearly labelled link that is visible on the cart page, just before checkout, is the practical option; stores on Shopify Plus can add content to the checkout with an extension.
- For the GARAN label: list the products whose producer offers more than two years on the whole product, ask the producer for the completed label, and add it as an image in the product gallery or in the description, with the link to the page its QR code points to.
What MT: Omnibus Price & EU GARAN does for you
MT: Omnibus Price & EU GARAN is our app for the EU 30-day lowest price rule. It also includes a guarantee module, on every plan including the free one. It uses the European Commission's official files, unchanged. Here is exactly what it does, and what it does not.
- The official notice, one click away on every product page. A theme block adds a reminder sentence near the price. On the first click it opens the official EU notice in full, in the language of the page (all 24 EU languages), with the clickable link to the page its QR code points to.
- The same reminder on every page of the store. An app embed places it at the bottom of all pages, cart included, which is the "general reminder on the website" the guidelines describe.
- The official GARAN label on eligible products. You record the producer guarantee, in months, in a product metafield. The product page then shows the official compact ("nested") label, and the first click opens the official full label with its three fields filled in: years, brand and model. Brand and model come from two product metafields, or from the vendor and the SKU when you leave them empty.
- Years written the way the rules require. Whole years or half years with a comma, always rounded down: 30 months shows 2,5 and 40 months shows 3. The label therefore starts at 30 months.
- The app never invents a guarantee. It only creates the fields. The duration comes from you, because it comes from the producer.
- A bulk editor for guarantee durations (paid plans): filter by vendor, collection, type or tag, preview the number of products, apply.
- Ready-made code for the order confirmation e-mail, in the language you choose: the official notice with its link, and one line per ordered product that carries a long producer guarantee. You paste it once into Shopify's notification template; a step-by-step guide with screenshots shows exactly where.
- A checklist in the app: notice switched on, block detected in your published theme, guarantees recorded.
What it does not do. No app can add content to the checkout page of a store that is not on Shopify Plus; the reminder on the cart page is the closest point. In the confirmation e-mail, the GARAN label is recalled as a text line, not as the filled-in label image. The reminder sentence and the notice both follow the shopper's language in all 24 official EU languages. And the app cannot know which of your products carry a producer guarantee: that part is yours.
